The attached image shows the number of paid holidays and annual leave for many countries. It is interesting to note that France has the most paid annual leave days at 30 while Canada falls at a mere 10. Furthermore, the United States unfortunately has 0. Do you think we should have more leave days? How fair does your country seem?
In keeping with yesterday’s theme, I have attached another illustration depicting a more recent use of propaganda, this time in Libya. The image was created to support Muammar Gaddafi, the previous leader of Libya during the recent civil war (2011). Gaddafi, who called himself the ‘Brotherly Leader and Guide of the Revolution’ is depicted as defending Libya with a sword and shield inscribed with various values including justice. Surrounding him, are many world leaders drawn as devils, including the President of the United States, the United Nations, and the Prime Minister of Britain. They are attacking with pens, symbolizing their use of doctrine, policy, and laws that they ‘illegally’ applied to Libya.
In this case, the people were able to discover the truth and led a successful revolution.
One thing that has always allowed me to consider another viewpoint is their use of propaganda. In this specific case, we have a North Korean propaganda painting showing western soldiers attacking the innocent North Korean people. I would like to draw your attention to two specific items. First, the soldiers although portrayed as American, do not have any national identification symbols. This allows them to generically represent any Americans, Europeans, or in fact, any and all nations simultaneously. You can see the looks on the soldiers faces, aggressive and unrelenting while they attack with vicious dogs. The second point is the depiction of the innocent people. The artist has specifically included children, women and those who are disabled and helpless.
The point is not that North Korea is using propaganda wrongly, in fact they use it just as we would and did. The point is that you have to understand what the people believe to be true. They have been taught from birth that the rest of the world is vicious and evil. Imagine yourself as a North Korean citizen. Would you not be willing to fight for your country and your dictator, he whom has protected you from the savages of the rest of the world?
They have not been given the chance to discover truth on their own.
In the map, areas shaded green show where the metric system is used where as the areas in grey use the imperial system. The metric system was, in the words of the French philosopher Condorcet to be “for all people for all time”. It was designed for ordinary people, for engineers who worked in human-related measurements and for astronomers and physicists who worked with numbers both small and large, hence the huge range of prefixes that have now been defined.
The United States is the only industrialized country to still use the imperial system, however the metric system does still see use there.
Should the United States convert to the metric system, what do you think?
A comparison of the left and right governments of the United States. Most prominently a basic overview of the liberal democratic left and the conservative republican right. On which side do you fall?
